All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely

A 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book, and recipient of the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Children’s Literature.

In this New York Times bestselling novel, two teens—one black, one white—grapple with the repercussions of a single violent act that leaves their school, their community, and, ultimately, the country bitterly divided by racial tension.

A bag of chips. That’s all sixteen-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad’s pleadings that he’s stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad’s resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad’s every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered. But how can you stay still when someone is pounding your face into the concrete pavement?

There were witnesses: Quinn Collins—a varsity basketball player and Rashad’s classmate who has been raised by Paul since his own father died in Afghanistan—and a video camera. Soon the beating is all over the news and Paul is getting threatened with accusations of prejudice and racial brutality. Quinn refuses to believe that the man who has basically been his savior could possibly be guilty. But then Rashad is absent. And absent again. And again. And the basketball team—half of whom are Rashad’s best friends—start to take sides. As does the school. And the town. Simmering tensions threaten to explode as Rashad and Quinn are forced to face decisions and consequences they had never considered before.

Written in tandem by two award-winning authors, this four-starred reviewed tour de force shares the alternating perspectives of Rashad and Quinn as the complications from that single violent moment, the type taken directly from today’s headlines, unfold and reverberate to highlight an unwelcome truth.

Book Review: Delirium

Delirium, Lauren Oliver, Dark Fantasy, 4.08 stars, Delirium (Delirium, #1)

"They say that the cure for Love will make me happy and safe forever.

And I've always believed them.

Until now.

Now everything has changed.

Now, I'd rather be infected with love for the tiniest sliver of a second than live a hundred years smothered by a lie."

Lena's family has a scandal filled past. Her mother was infected with the most deadly disease of all. Love. So was her sister, Rachel, but Rachel never committed suicide. The procedure worked. It never did for Lena's mom. Her father died when she was a baby, so she must live with her power-conserving aunt, Carol. All adults MUST have the procedure, or else. Lena can't wait for her's. The nasty looks won't effect her anymore. She'll be calm and happy.

95 days

94 days

93 days

Lena counts down, waiting. She will marry Brian Scharff when she is out of college, have two or three kids, live every day calm and cool as a cucumber, all extreme emotions non-existent.

Until, that is, she falls in Love, even though it's against the law.

Dragon Keeper review

In the far western mountains of the Han dynasty of China, a  nameless slave girl takes care of the last imperial dragons  instead of the fake dragon keeper, Master Lan. One dies and cruel  Lan makes it into pickle and feeds it to the emperor, who later  dies. The slave girl then embarks on a journey with the dragon,  Long Danzi, and the dragon stone. She finds out her name is Ping  and that a) Danzi  can change shape, b) arsenic is healing to dragons,   c) her name means  "Duckweed", and d) they are going to "Ocean".  Farther on their voyage, they come across a village with a  drought and the townspeople try to sacrifice her to the "dragon  in the lake." Danzi saves her and they keep going, traveling for  weeks. They run across the new Emperor, who tries to keep them at  his palace. they do eventually reach Ocean, which is very  different from what Ping imagined it to be. Along with surprises,  narrow escapes, and suspense throughout the book, if you like any  of these qualities or dragons and traveling, you will like this  author and book. I rate this 5 out of 5 stars and will recommend  this to anyone who asks. It is a historical fiction/fantasy mix  and I love it.

Jurassic Park book review.

Even though I am not in this course, I have read this book. It is about a guy who tries to create an amusement park, but with dinosaurs. He invites guests over, because, an employee died there, and he needs prove that it is safe. Everything goes wrong, and their are a lot of deaths. This is a good book, but Violent. It is also very disturbing, and a little creepy. I suggest 6th grade, or, even 7th grade and up.

Mick Harte Was Here

Mick Harte Was Hereby Barbara Park a realistic fiction book.

Phoebe tells the story of her brother Mick's death in a bicycle accident, and its aftermath. Through funny and poignant memories, eighth-grader Phoebe Harte introduces her brother Mick, ten months younger, and tells the story of his fatal accident. She then describes her reactions and experiences over the ensuing days. She attends his funeral, interment, and memorial service, and gradually is comforted by her best friend, her spiritual intuition, and her family. Though she struggles profoundly with her feelings, she makes a re-entry into daily life and school, finding setbacks, support, and, finally, stability. This book is a demonstration of the devastating power of simplicity. With breathtaking elements and precise strokes, Barbara Park brings MickHarte and his sister Phoebe to vivid life. Even in showing his death you can barely believe it is happening, like Phoebe, you enter a undistinguishing state of denial. And because Park gives Phoebe such a distinct, genuine voice, her reactions are real and familiar. Park moves the reader back and forth, from Mick to his sister, gradually disengaging them, separating the tightly interwoven strands of their lives, until Phoebe can stand alone, finally strong and confident without her brother at her side. The author skillfully ties in the lesson about wearing bicycle helmets. And it is made so directly and simply that it doesn't seem at all preachy. In fact, it is probably one of the most powerful elements of the book. I give this book four and a half stars.

Mila 2.0 by Debra Driza

Debra Driza's MILA 2.0 is the first book in a gripping Bourne Identity–style trilogy about a girl who discovers she is actually an android.

Mila was never supposed to remember her past, or know what lurked beneath her synthetic skin. She was never meant to learn that she was "born" in a secret computer science lab and programmed with superhuman skills. But when a group of hooded men show up on her doorstep, hoping to strip her of her advanced technology, she has no choice but to run for her life. In every direction there are dangerous people, hunting her down. They will do whatever it takes to capture Mila, including hurting the people she cares about most.

Filled with secrets, action, and even romance, MILA 2.0 is perfect for readers who love sci-fi thrillers like the Partials series and I Am Number Four.

Out of my Mind

Out of My Mind

Written by Sharon Draper

How would you feel to be one of the smartest people in your grade but have no way to tell anyone? To be able to memorize everything you hear but not be able to proclaim the facts? That’s exactly how Melody feels. She has cerebral palsy, a condition that affects your body but not your mind. This story follows her as she tries to gain respect despite her difference.

This is a great book about overcoming tough conditions. Anyone who likes to read should definitely read this realistic fiction book. I recommend it for so many reasons, one of them being that it is a flat-out inspirational story. Sharon Draper does a perfect job of letting you feel like Melody does in this book. Five stars out of five for this book!

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

One day after returning home from his boarding school, Percy and his mother Sally Jackson, travel to a beach in Montauk. After a series of harrowing incidents, Percy finds out that he is a demigod son of Poseidon and that the gods are accusing him of stealing Zeus' master lightning bolt. To clear his name and save the world from another war between the Olympian gods, he sets out to find the real thief and retrieve the lightning bolt. Thus Percy Jackson and his companions, a satyr named Grover Underwood and Annabeth Chase, a daughter of Athena, start on a journey to the underworld, facing numerous mythological monsters on the way.

Percy Jackson's Gods and Godesses

This is a book about the gods and godesses of greek mythology. Narrated by Percy Jackson, it gives his unique (and funny) take on what he thinks of the twelve Olympian gods, "plus a few bonus gods, like Persephone and Hades!" While enjoyable, it is also very informative on many greek myths.

Spacer and Rat by Margaret Bechard

Jack knows who belongs out in the Black. And who doesn't -- until Kit comes walking into the pub and changes everything he believes about the Black, about the people who live there, about what it takes to be a human being. Margaret Bechard set out to write an adventure story with laser guns ad spaceships. Then, she says, "there was a big step and a long fall off a cliff while I realized that my characters didn't want to do the stuff I had in my mind; they had plans of their own." The result: a fast-paced space adventure and a short story about human feeling and growing up -- science fiction for those who love SF; riveting fiction for those who don't.

Sylvia and Aki by Winifred Conkling

Young Sylvia Mendez never expected to be at the center of a landmark legal battle. Young Aki Munemitsu never expected to be sent away from her home and her life as she knew it. The two girls definitely never expected to know each other, until their lives intersected on a Southern California farm in a way that changed the country forever. Who are Sylvia and Aki? And why did their family stories matter then and still matter today? This book reveals the remarkable, never-before-told story—based on true events—of Mendez vs. Westminster School District, the California court case that desegregated schools for Latino children and set the stage for Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education at the national level.

The Book of the Maidservant

“The Book of the Maidservant”

By Rebecca Barnhouse

Johanna is not a happy girl. She was cast out of her home and  found work as a maidservant to a cruel and religious woman, Dame  Margery Kempe. Johanna’s life consisted of fetching water and  firewood, peeling vegetables, and starting fires until now. Dame  Margery has decided to embark on a religious pilgrimage to Rome  to cleanse her soul. She joins a group of fellow pilgrims, only  one of which Johanna actually enjoys. In one part of the book,  she comments on how one of the pilgrims, Petrus, never hesitates  to show her his fists when she displeases him. Wondering about  why while she is commanded by the whole party of pilgrims, Lady  Isabella’s servant is only commanded by her and her husband. A  startling discovery leads Johanna to wonder if it is worth it to  stay with the pilgrims. After Dame Margery abandons her in the  Swiss Alps, Johanna is left to find her own way to Rome and to  help an injured member of the pilgrimage.

I would rate this book five out of five stars. It has a stunning  commentary, and problems that don’t usually come to mind in other  books, such as running away from a woman who is constantly bent  on her knees in prayer, and could get you thrown in jail for  being a female priest, which is illegal in this time period, and  is still illegal today.

“The devil, I think, wakes when my mistress does.” This quote  from the beginning of the book, when Johanna is tending to Dame  Margery’s fire, contemplating the things Dame Margery says to her  about avoiding the devil. The reason Johanna is speaking about  the devil waking is that Dame Margery says staring into flames  will bring the devil about, but Johanna believes that the devil  is within her mistress.

The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow

The children of world leaders are held hostage in an attempt to keep the peace in this “slyly humorous, starkly thought-provoking” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) novel.

Greta is a Duchess and a Crown Princess. She is also a Child of Peace, a hostage held by the de facto ruler of the world, the great Artificial Intelligence, Talis. This is how the game is played: if you want to rule, you must give one of your children as a hostage. Start a war and your hostage dies.

The system has worked for centuries. Parents don’t want to see their children murdered.

Greta will be free if she can make it to her eighteenth birthday. Until then she is prepared to die with dignity, if necessary. But everything changes when Elian arrives at the Precepture. He’s a hostage from a new American alliance, and he defies the machines that control every part of their lives—and is severely punished for it. His rebellion opens Greta’s eyes to the brutality of the rules they live under, and to the subtle resistance of her companions. And Greta discovers her own quiet power.

Then Elian’s country declares war on Greta’s and invades the prefecture, taking the hostages hostage. Now the great Talis is furious, and coming himself to deliver punishment. Which surely means that Greta and Elian will be killed...unless Greta can think of a way to break all the rules.

The Selection
